Welcome to our Australian website with a focus on yarns from environmentally friendly animal and other natural fibres.
Alpacas are ecologically sound and gentle on the environment with soft padded feet like camels, excellent feed conversion rates, and use of communal manure piles for easier parasite control. This luxurious fibre has a wide variety of natural colours -- from white, creams, beiges, rosy fawns to deep brown; and from the silvers, through the greys to charcoal, black and blue-black.
Australia's finnsheep are also an asset to eco-friendly living and animal health aspirations. They have a short triangle tail, fleece-free legs and face. That means no tail docking or museling, no risk of fleece blindnesss, and no getting fly-blown. They are an easily handled medium size docile sheep, and above all have a fantastic soft super high lustre fibre ideal for yarns, and adored by handspinners.
We are committed to using Australian fibers in our designer created commercial yarn and products. We have a special commitment to preserving rare and heritage fibre breeds.
While we could work with handspun yarns, there are many of you out there who do. We decided back in the late 1990's that there was a desperate need for high quality commercial yarns featuring Australian fibers... and so began our journey where for over two decades now we have been designing yarn varieties, colours and textures to create a high quality commercially manufactured knitting yarn. Our current yarn ranges feature Australian alpaca - the traditional huacaya (sheep wool-like fiber), the Suri (lustrous sheen and slide) and the rare heritage breed Australian Finnsheep (very soft lustrous).

ecostrands is an Australian small business enterprise operated by Lucy & John Edwards in Allendale Victoria 3364.
With their natural affinity to eco-friendly and ecologically sound production, we have a keen interest and specialty in Australia's Finnsheep and Alpaca fibers which are featured in our textiles and knitting yarn company based on these fibres using the brand names Tailored Strands and ecostrands.
